Dane Goodwin scored 30 points to lead Upper Arlington (Ohio) to a 65-51 defeat of Raytown South on Monday in the first game of the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic at Fleming Fieldhouse.
Goodwin sunk 13-of-14 free throws and was 8-of-15 from the field with a team-high eight rebounds.
The Golden Bears took what appeared to be a commanding lead early, going up 13-4 before the Cardinals were forced to call a timeout. But Raytown South cut the margin to eight by the end of the first quarter and used an 8-0 run to take the lead at 34-33, its first since 2-0.
It lasted all of 22 seconds, however, as Jake Kern hit a 3-pointer, his third of five on the night, to take the lead. Kern finished with 17 points off the bench for the Golden Bears.
The Cardinals stuck within two possessions until less than five minutes remained in the game and Upper Arlington ran away with the game on a 13-0 run. The last four points of the run came after a technical on the Cardinals’ bench.
Raytown South, which finished fourth in the Great 8 last year, never came closer than 13 after that, as the Golden Bears’ run left the Cardinals less than two minutes to recover.
Jabril Cox led the Cardinals with 19 points and eight rebounds, shooting 8-of-14 from the field. Devon Wells was also in double figures with 10 points. He was perfect from the floor, making all five field goals.
The Cardinals missed 9-of-18 free throws and failed to make a 3-pointer.
